ISIS working to free its elements from Syria, Iraq prisons
Fear from ISIS is causing mass displacement in al-Hasakah, northeastern Syria, once more, for the first time since the defeat of the terrorist organization.
This comes in the wake of an attack
by ISIS on a prison under the control of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in
the Ghweran neighborhood.
The prison facility used to house
prisoners from the terrorist organization.
The attack raised fears from the organization's
reawakening, after a long period of latency in Syria and Iraq.
The prison attack coincided with a
similar operation in Iraq on January 21, which left 11 Iraqi troops dead in the
eastern Diyala province.
Liberation of prisoners
ISIS launched an attack on a prison
under the control of Kurdish forces east of al-Hasakah in Syria, leaving over
65 people dead on both sides.
Civilians and prisoners from the
terrorist organization were also caught in the middle of the fighting that
accompanied the prison attack.
Sources close to ISIS said on
Telegram that the organization is focusing at this stage on liberating its
detained prisoners.
They added that the leader of ISIS
issued a directive to its elements to focus their efforts in the coming period
on releasing prisoners by striking and targeting prisons that contain the
organization's detainees.
In Syria, he allocated financial
rewards for that, especially when it comes to the organization's detainees in
SDF prisons, the sources said.
SDF militias used to control the
last strongholds of ISIS in the al-Baghouz region of Syria, having received support
from international coalition forces.
This was when hundreds of ISIS fighters
were captured. Dozens of the leaders of the organization also surrendered themselves
voluntarily to the SDF.
