Arab condemnations of Iran's destabilizing behavior: Messages before reviving nuclear agreement
At a time when Iran's subversive
activity is increasing and its arms are moving to target and destabilize the
countries of the region, the Arab League has criticized Tehran's support for
terrorist militias in a number of Arab countries.
Rejecting
threats against security and stability of Morocco
The Arab League held a meeting at
the level of foreign ministers, in which it expressed its rejection of Iran's
arming of separatist elements that threaten the security and stability of
Morocco.
The Arab ministerial meeting adopted
a decision taken by the Arab Ministerial Quartet Committee to follow up on the
developments of the crisis with Iran and ways to confront its interference in
the internal affairs of Arab countries.
The decision of the Arab League
comes as a form of solidarity with the Kingdom of Morocco in confronting the
interference by the Iranian regime and Hezbollah in its internal affairs, especially
with regard to arming and training separatist elements that threaten Morocco’s
territorial integrity, security and stability. The ministerial committee
stressed that these dangerous and unacceptable practices are a continuation of
the destabilizing approach of the Iranian regime to regional security and
stability.
The decision was taken at a meeting
held by the committee concerned with following up on the crisis with Iran on
the sidelines of the 157th session of the Arab League at the ministerial level.
Morocco was represented in the meeting by its Minister of Foreign Affairs,
African Cooperation and Moroccans Expatriates, Nasser Bourita, as well as
Morocco’s ambassador to Egypt and its permanent representative to the Arab
League, Ahmed Tazi.
Discussing
Iranian nuclear file
The meeting also touched on the
Iranian nuclear file, as the Arab foreign ministers supported international
efforts to prevent Tehran from acquiring a nuclear weapon, stressing that the
Iranian regime must abide by Security Council Resolution No. 2231 regarding its
missile program.
The Arab League Quartet Committee,
which includes Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Bahrain and the UAE, was held under the
chairmanship of Saudi Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan. The committee's
statement condemned Iranian interference in Arab countries and called on the
Iranian regime to abandon its support for terrorist militias in some Arab
countries.
The Arab League statement also
referred to the use of Iranian drones and missiles by the Houthi militia in
Yemen to attack Saudi Arabia and the UAE, considering these practices a serious
threat to regional security and stability and a violation of UN Security
Council Resolution No. 2216.
Timing
The Arab League meeting came in
conjunction with the issuance of a joint Egyptian-Saudi statement condemning
the Iranian behavior in the region, stressing the importance of dealing
seriously and effectively with Iran’s nuclear and missile file with all its
components and repercussions in a way that contributes to achieving regional
and international security and stability, as well as affirming the principles
of good neighborliness, respect for UN decisions and international legitimacy,
and sparing the region from all destabilizing activities.
These data indicate an Arab keenness
to send messages to the parties to the nuclear agreement that any leniency with
Tehran will increase the region’s crises and destabilize it, and that attention
should be paid to addressing the files that Tehran refuses to touch, such as
the missile program and regional influence, especially in light of the rumors
that a US-Western agreement could imminently be reached with Iran regarding
reviving the agreement without resolving these issues.
