With its turquoise seawaters and rich coral reefs, Egypt’s resort town of Sharm el-Sheikh hosts this year’s United Nations global summit on climate change, known as COP27.

Delegates at the U.N.'s summit with more than 120 world leaders arrive at COP27, in Sharm el-Sheikh to kick off two weeks of negotiations scheduled to run through Nov. 18. between countries on climate action.

President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi said that he is proudly eyeing to open Cop 27.

“COP 27 is an opportunity to showcase unity against an existential threat that we can only overcome through concerted action and effective implementation” El-Sisi added.

“There is no doubt that these dangers and challenges require quick action by all countries to develop a road map to rescue, protect the world from the effects of climate change.” El-Sisi added.

COP26 President, Alok Sharma, in open the twenty-seventh session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, said “let me begin by thanking our friends here in Egypt for such a warm welcome”.

“My team and I know just how demanding hosting such a conference is, and how many people have worked incredibly hard to get us to this point. So congratulations, and thank you again” Sharma added.

He also said in his word “I will do everything in my power to support our Egyptian friends. The UK is here to reach ambitious outcomes across the agenda, including on mitigation, on adaptation, and on loss and damage”.

The opening session kicked off as Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry was handed over the presidency from Mr. Alok Sharma, President of COP 26.

In his speech, COP27 President Sameh Shoukry thanked participants for choosing Egypt to host COP27. He added that Egypt will spare no effort to help COP27 succeed and allow all participants to have their say.

Shoukry also thanked the U.K. and Alok Sharma for the tight cooperation since COP26 to guarantee a successful COP27.

He said that COP27 is a landmark on a long trajectory against the most important challenge facing humanity.

COP27 will really begin on Monday with a World Leaders' Summit, when heads of state and government leaders deliver five-minute addresses outlining what they want from the meeting.

As well as all the formal negotiations there will be hundreds of events over the two weeks with exhibitions, workshops and cultural performances from youth, business groups, indigenous societies, academia, artists and fashion communities from all over the world.
