Parliament endorses bill to seize MB assets
Cairo
– The parliament endorsed on Tuesday a bill regulating the seizure, management
and disposal of assets owned by terrorists and terrorist organizations.
In
2013, the government banned the Muslim Brotherhood. Consequently, the
organization's assets were seized. In 2016, a total of 62 companies, 19 foreign
exchange firms, 1,125 civil societies, assets of 1,370 individuals were all
seized. The assets totaled EGP 5.556 billion.
"There
cannot a complete list of the Brotherhood's assets as the organization's funds
and assets are owned by a number of businesspeople," Tarek Abul Saad, a researcher
in Islamist movements, told THE REFERENCE.
"The
Brotherhood is very cautious regarding its assets, donations, zakat and
subscriptions. No payments could be proved. The organization entrusts
businesspeople with funds, making it difficult to segregate the group's money
from assets owned by individuals," he added.
