Political Deals and a Possible Truce between Paris and Tehran
Recent developments have shown a potential breakthrough
between Tehran and Paris, despite the tensions that have long existed between
the two countries. The French citizen's release was seen by some as a gesture
by the regime to back down in the face of the protests, while others considered
it a deal between Tehran and Paris, especially since the move came two days
after the arrival of the new French ambassador to Tehran.
Tehran released two Iranian activists and one of the
seven French citizens detained by it after the arrival of the French
ambassador, who demanded the need to release the French detainees. The Adelkhah
Support Committee revealed that the French-Iranian citizen had not yet
recovered all her rights, such as her passport, computer, and address book.
Additionally, the fate of the remaining French detainees in Iran remains
unknown.
The French position on the Iranian regime is not firm,
according to the Iranian affairs researcher Muhammad Ebadi. While French
leaders have made statements hostile to the Iranian regime, they have not
implemented the same level of pressure sanctions as the United States and
Canada. The researcher attributed this to France's desire to save the nuclear
agreement with Iran and its many economic, diplomatic, and political interests.
The release of the French citizen after three years of
imprisonment in Iran may contribute to the rapprochement of views between Tehran
and Paris, although the impact of this step should not be exaggerated. The
Iranian protests against the regime have entered their fifth month without
abating, even if they have slowed down in many places.
