Kenya Follows in Somalia's Footsteps in War on Terrorism, Says Interior Minister
In a bid to combat terrorism and extremist groups in the
country, the government of Kenya is seeking to involve the forces of the people
and tribal clans. The move is similar to the approach taken by Somalia in
enlisting the help of civilians in its war against terrorist organizations in
the country.
Kenyan Interior Minister Keithor Kindiki recently confirmed
the government's efforts during a security tour in the northeastern region of
the country. Speaking to political leaders and government agencies, Kindiki
highlighted the importance of involving society and playing a significant role
in the fight against groups like al-Shabaab and ISIS.
The Kenyan government has also expressed its willingness to
reopen the Mandera border crossing with Somalia, which was closed in 2012 to
stop the incursion of Al-Shabab militants into Kenyan territory. The reopening
of the border crossing is expected to contribute to improving border security
and suppressing smuggling operations.
However, the Kenyan government has acknowledged that
eliminating terrorism in the country cannot be achieved without the cooperation
of society. Kindiki stressed the government's commitment to providing necessary
support for the operation without incurring any material or human losses.
The move is similar to the strategy adopted by the Somali
government under President Hassan Sheikh Mahmoud. Nasser Mamoun Issa, an expert
on African affairs, praised the Somali president's efforts to involve the
people in maintaining security and stability. Issa noted that Sheikh Mahmoud
has adopted a new strategy in combating terrorist activities of Al-Shabaab and
has made a pledge to eliminate the group within a year of assuming power.
Kenya's adoption of a similar approach to that of Somalia
could prove to be successful in combating terrorism in the country. The
involement of society and tribal sheikhs, in coordination with security
authorities, will ensure the distribution of roles and responsibility in the
fight against terrorism.
