A
member of the Tunisian Hizb ut-Tahrir's media office has said the Islamic
caliphate is one the party's main objectives if it assumes power in Tunisia.
Mohammed Maghdich told a conference titled "The Islamic Caliphate… The
Coming Power", marking the 97th anniversary of the Ottoman Caliphate's
dissolution.
He has said the party's participation in the Tunisian political arena "does not
mean Hizb ut-Tahrir's approval of Tunisia's constitution or the political scene
as a whole".
He
said his party, known for its extremist and ultraconservative doctrines, would rule
according to Shariah, or Islamic law, if it assumed power.
