Davutoglu to run for president against Erdogan in 2023
Former Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet
Davutoglu plans to run for president in Turkey's next presidential election in
2023, media sources said.
The Yenicag newspaper said quoted MP Selcuk Ozdag, who is close to Davutoglu, as saying that Davutoglu would run for president.
Ozdag said that the present Turkish presidential system “is wrong”. “We will go through the elections with a system full of mistakes,” Ozdag told Yenicag newspaper.
”We target to get 50 + 1 of votes in the coming presidential election," he said.
Ozdag pointed to victims of the state of emergency in Turkey between 2016 and 2018, citing the need to honor human rights, democracy, and the rule of law.
As Davutoglu has made up his mind to run for president to defeat Erdogan, he may unofficially form an alliance with the opposition. Moreover, Davutoglu’s new party, which is expected to be launched on November 25, may lure AKP members who reject Erdogan’s policies.
Researcher Mohamed Hamed, an expert on Turkish affairs, has said that Davutoglu’s victory depends on how far he could persuade the masses of the Justice and Development Party's (AKP) to support him, citing that Davutoglu is one of the AKP founders.
“Davutoglu knows secrets about AKP that could topple the party if he wants. However, Davutoglu will not collide with AKP and will only focus on political and economic reforms,” Hamed told THE REFERENCE.
