Weak EU measures against Turkish violations
As Turkish President RecepTayyip Erdogan talks about sending troops to Libya, the European Union should have mademoves to stop this, especially as it is evident that the Ankara wants to explore for gas and oil in the east Mediterranean near Cyprus.
That shows how weak European policies are towards Turkey. The European countries always give in to Turkey’s blackmailing policies to serve their interests.
Erdoganthreatened to send back ISIS fighters to their home countries in Europe after the EU foreign ministers had announced November 11to impose sanctions on Ankara on the back of Turkish plans to excavate for gas off the Cyprus territorial waters.
Moreover, Erdogan called on the EU to reconsider its stance towards Turkey, especially as the return of ISIS fighters is major concern for Europe. Erdogan also threatened to open the way for ISIS fighters into Europe.
German political analyst Andreas Kluth wrote in a Bloomberg article thatTurkey and Russia appear to be set on carving up the country, like Syria, into spheres of influence that will damage the EU’s interests.
On December 12, the EU only rejected in words an agreement signed between Turkey and Libya’s Government of National Accord without taking any tough measures against Ankara.
Kluth added that the EU weakness contrasts with the strength in unity the EU has found in other policy areas. In trade it has become a global superpower by acting in unison, even when that means compromising the national interests of member states. Yet foreign policy and defense remain purely national matters.
