Libya's Election Commission working tooth and nail to hold vote this month
The Libyan High Elections Commission has called for removing impediments on the road of the legislative elections that should have been held in December of last year.
The commission added that it would not be able to organize the vote
if these hindrances are not removed before January 24, the new date of the
elections.
House of Representatives (parliament) Speaker, Fawzi al-Nuiri, had
to suspend a parliament session on January 3 to ask the High Elections Commission
to contact the Road Map Committee and set a new date for the elections,
House of Representatives Spokesman, Abdullah Belhaq, said the
session was suspended, even as 80 MPs were present.
He added that the MPs had to listen to Elections Commission Head, Imad
al-Sayeh, who presented a briefing about the entire electoral process.
The commission head, he added, also answered questions by the MPs about
all the reports submitted to the parliament regarding the failure to meet the
electoral entitlement on December 24, 2021.
The Roadmap Committee was formed by the House of Representatives to
discuss ways to address the constitutional process with the Rapporteur of the
Constituent Assembly for the Drafting of the Constitution and the Chairman of
the Working Committee.
It said it had agreed with the members of the Constituent Assembly
for the Drafting of the Constitution to hold another expanded meeting with the
Communication Committee, formed by the commission.
The commission indicated that it seeks to meet later with other
members, who have different views on the way forward.
Libyan observers confirm, meanwhile, that the United Nations
mission in Libya wishes to change the method of the upcoming elections after
they were postponed.
