The relationship between Lebanon’s Hezbollah and Qatar began to take on new political dimensions since roughly 2006, based primarily on Qatari funding, even surpassing the relationship between the terrorist militia and Iran.
Funding and weapons
Although it is difficult to estimate the amount of funding or weapons that Doha provides to Hezbollah, experts and analysts have emphasized that the Qatari support plays a key role in Hezbollah's steadfastness, especially after the recent decline in support from Tehran, which is suffering from a major financial crisis.
With US sanctions and global restrictions imposed on Hezbollah, Qatar played the role of savior by means of cover commercial operations through certain parties to deliver money to the militia or by sending cash.
Ammonium nitrate
The Beirut explosion that occurred on Tuesday, August 4 was caused by the presence of large quantities of ammonium nitrate, a substance that has previously been found in the homes of Hezbollah leaders in Kuwait and Germany, and there is the possibility that Hezbollah might have been linked to the stored explosive chemical.
Fox News revealed that Qatar is a major funder of Hezbollah, quoting a former security contractor who worked for a number of Western intelligence services named Jason G. that a member of the ruling family in Doha allowed weapons to be given to Hezbollah, which is classified as a terrorist organization by the United States.
Jason is in possession of documents proving Qatar’s funding of Hezbollah, which he obtained while working in Doha as a secret agent for an intelligence agency. The file includes information about an arms deal that a Qatari company bought from Eastern Europe for Hezbollah.
Last month, Die Zeit revealed the existence of documents proving that Qatar was financing Hezbollah.
The German newspaper disclosed that it had obtained evidence confirming that wealthy Qataris and Lebanese living in Doha send money to Hezbollah in Beirut, with the knowledge and support of Qatari officials and through a Qatari charitable organization.
It also reported information about an arms deal from Eastern Europe to Hezbollah that was being handled by a Qatari company.
