Born on March 14, 1971, in Giza, Egypt, Dr. Khaled El-Enany stands as one of the most distinguished figures bridging academia, cultural heritage, and public service. A renowned Egyptologist, academic, and former Minister of Tourism and Antiquities, El-Enany has spent his career preserving, promoting, and interpreting Egypt’s unparalleled historical legacy for the modern world.

Having led both the Ministry of Antiquities (2016–2019) and later the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities (2019–2022) under President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi and Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly, El-Enany became the first Egyptian official to unify the management of Egypt’s cultural heritage with its tourism strategy. His leadership was marked by a vision that integrated heritage preservation with sustainable tourism, aligning closely with UNESCO’s global mission.

Academic Foundations and Early Career

El-Enany graduated from Helwan University’s Faculty of Tourism and Hotel Management, specializing in tourism guidance and Egyptology. After earning his PhD in Egyptology from Paul-Valéry University in Montpellier, France, in 2001, he began an academic career at Helwan University that would soon distinguish him as one of Egypt’s leading heritage scholars.

He served as Director of the Open Education Center (2010–2012), Head of the Tourism Guidance Department (2011–2012), and Vice Dean for Education and Student Affairs (2012–2013). His academic work extended beyond Egypt: he was a Visiting Professor at Paul-Valéry University and taught ancient Egyptian language, civilization, and heritage management at numerous universities in Egypt, France, Germany, and Switzerland.

A prolific scholar, El-Enany has supervised and examined dozens of master’s and doctoral theses, and he played a key role in heritage preservation programs at international institutions such as the Brandenburg University of Technology in Cottbus, Germany, and the University of Palermo, Italy.

International Recognition and Affiliations

El-Enany’s international presence is rooted in decades of scholarly cooperation. He is a corresponding member of the German Archaeological Institute in Berlin and a board member of the French Institute for Oriental Archaeology (IFAO) in Paris since 2011. He also serves on the scientific committees of ENiM and Égypte, two leading French journals of Egyptology.

He has represented Egypt in major global conferences, including the 11th International Congress of Egyptologists in Florence and the 9th Congress in Grenoble, and participated in three Franco-Egyptian archaeological missions in Atfih. El-Enany also took part in UNESCO’s International Executive Committee for the Nubia Museum Campaign, reflecting his early collaboration with the organization he now aspires to lead.

Honors and Awards

For his contributions to cultural diplomacy and heritage preservation, Dr. El-Enany has been decorated with several prestigious international honors:

Order of Arts and Letters (Knight Rank) – Republic of France, 2015

Order of Merit – Republic of Poland, 2020

Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Star – Japan, 2021

These awards highlight his efforts to foster global dialogue through culture and his leadership in promoting intercultural understanding.

Leadership in Heritage and Museum Development

As Minister, El-Enany oversaw landmark projects including the Grand Egyptian Museum, the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization (NMEC), and major archaeological discoveries across Egypt. He supervised the historic Royal Mummies Parade in 2021 — a cultural event that captivated international audiences and symbolized Egypt’s modern renaissance in heritage management.

He also played a central role in advancing international partnerships in museum curation, conservation, and tourism, emphasizing education, cultural accessibility, and sustainable development — priorities that mirror UNESCO’s global agenda.

A Candidate Shaped by Heritage and Global Vision

Fluent in Arabic, French, and English, El-Enany embodies the cross-cultural dialogue that UNESCO seeks to champion. His career unites academic rigor, international cooperation, and national service, making him a uniquely qualified candidate to lead one of the world’s foremost cultural and educational institutions.

From the lecture halls of Cairo and Montpellier to the global stage of heritage diplomacy, Dr. Khaled El-Enany’s journey reflects Egypt’s living dialogue with history — and its vision for a shared human future.
