Portugal: Merkel wishes Portugal ‘best of luck’ for EU presidency, pending issues

Germany’s chancellor, Angela Merkel, on Friday
wished Portugal’s prime minister, António Costa, whose country takes over the
presidency of the Council of the European Union from January, the “best of
luck”, with the issues left open after Germany’s current six-month stint.
“We have left many questions open for the Portuguese
presidency,” Merkel acknowledged at a news conference in Brussels after
Friday’s European Council meeting. “I wish my successor, António Costa, the
best of luck.”
The chancellor highlighted as a priority for Portugal’s
presidency the work towards “a European Union of health” and the coordination
of the Covid-19 vaccination process.
Portugal is to take over the presidency of the EU
Council on 1 January, for a period of six months.
