Erdogan using violence to sabotage Libya conflict settlement

Despite optimism among Libyans against the background of recent understandings between their country's rivals, Turkey-backed militias continue to commit violations in western Libya, casting doubts on the prospects of ending the country's crisis in the near future.

Continual violations

Militants affiliated to the Tripoli-based Government of National Accord (GNA) attacked citizens in Tarhunah city, southeast of Tripoli. The militants also attacked the homes of the city.

Footage shared on social media recently showed the enormity of devastation happening in some of the homes of the city as a result of these attacks.

The militants accused the owners of these homes of cooperating with the Libyan National Army (LNA).

The attacks left one of the chieftains of the city dead. The militants broke into the house of the chieftain and killed him.

The attacks in Tarhunah caused anger among Libyans.

The Supreme Council of Libyan Tribes issued a statement in which it denounced the attacks.

There is also unrest in Sabratah, Libya's westernmost city. This unrest was confirmed by the council managing the city's affairs. The council said it was shocked by the extent of lawlessness in the city. It also criticized the entry of troops affiliate to the GNA into Sabratah.

It called on the Presidential Council, the eastern Libya parliament and the United Nations mission in Libya to work hard to alleviate the suffering of the residents of Sabratah.
