Jerusalem takes center stage in Dhahran summit
CAIRO – Seventeen Arab leaders gathered Sunday in
the eastern Saudi city of Dhahran for the 29th Arab League summit.
On the agenda for the summit this year was a host of
issues and challenges, including the crisis in Syria, Iran's destabilizing role
in the region and the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.
King Salman bin Abdul Azizi of Saudi Arabia warned
against growing Iranian influence in the region.
Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi referred,
meanwhile, to what he described as "unprecedented" challenges to
collective Arab security.
"Some regional powers have no respect for the
sovereignty of the states of the region," the Egyptian president said,
addressing other leaders and delegates attending the summit.
He said Egypt would not tolerate the launch of
ballistic missiles against Saudi Arabia from Yemen.
Sisi underscored the need for Arab unity on the
rights of the Palestinians.
