Tensions between the United States and China have once again escalated over concerns that Beijing is considering giving military aid to Moscow for the war in Ukraine. U.S. officials have warned that such a move would have far-reaching consequences, transforming the nature of the conflict and drawing China into a Cold War-style global rift. At a global security conference in Europe over the weekend, both nations’ foreign policy officials insisted that they were not seeking a new Cold War. However, new warnings by U.S. officials have highlighted the fact that China has refrained from providing material aid to Russia during the war in Ukraine, unlike Iran and North Korea.
U.S. Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken publicly spoke out against China’s aid to Russia, and shared the serious consequences that such actions could have on the two nations’ relationship. Officials in Washington and Europe have been preparing for a new Russian offensive in Ukraine this spring and have been doing everything they can to blunt Russia’s chances of breaking through Ukrainian defenses. The aid that China is expected to give to Russia will consist of weapons and ammunition, but no details have been provided about the intelligence that the Biden administration may have acquired.
Before Russia invaded Ukraine last February, Moscow and Beijing announced a “no limits” partnership, causing anxiety in Washington and European capitals. U.S. officials have tried to discourage China from giving Russia military aid by releasing intelligence findings and increasing global public scrutiny of any potential Chinese actions to support the Russians. The Biden administration has shared intelligence with its allies to deter any support from China.
China has strengthened its ties with Russia during the war in Ukraine, and its Foreign Ministry has officially pushed anti-American and anti-Ukrainian conspiracy theories. In January, the United States imposed sanctions on a Chinese company for giving satellite imagery to the Kremlin-aligned Russian militia. The United States has few cards to play with China, and relations between the two nations have hit one of their lowest points in decades
