President of the National Council for Human Rights (NCHR) Mohamed Faik said several challenges, mainly terrorism, hinder implementing the provisions of the UN Universal Declaration on Human Rights in spite of progress achieved by the world in that matter.

Faik was speaking Monday at a ceremony organized by the European Union delegation in Cairo in cooperation with the NCHR and Germany's GIZ Cairo on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the UN Universal Declaration on Human Rights.

The main challenge to peoples' enjoyment of full human rights is terrorism in addition to conflicts and wars, Faik noted, adding that the council released its annual report a few days ago on accomplishments and failures concerning concerning human rights.

He also lauded President Abdel Fattah El Sisi's reconsideration of the law on NGOs, terming it as a new and fresh launch in human rights in Egypt. He expressed his happiness for cooperating with the EU mission here and GIZ.

Meanwhile, Head of the EU Delegation in Cairo Ambassador Ivan Surkoš stressed that the EU is committed to supporting Egypt in implementing human rights obligations, citing the EU mission offered support to the NCHR complaints office.

Chairman of the Human Rights Committee Alaa Abed pointed to the importance of reviewing human rights topics in cooperation with the European countries.
