NCHR chief: Terrorism main challenge to human rights

President of the National Council for Human Rights
(NCHR) Mohamed Faik said several challenges, mainly terrorism, hinder
implementing the provisions of the UN Universal Declaration on Human Rights in
spite of progress achieved by the world in that matter.
Faik was speaking Monday at a ceremony organized by
the European Union delegation in Cairo in cooperation with the NCHR and
Germany's GIZ Cairo on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the UN Universal
Declaration on Human Rights.
The main challenge to peoples' enjoyment of full
human rights is terrorism in addition to conflicts and wars, Faik noted, adding
that the council released its annual report a few days ago on accomplishments
and failures concerning concerning human rights.
He also lauded President Abdel Fattah El Sisi's
reconsideration of the law on NGOs, terming it as a new and fresh launch in
human rights in Egypt. He expressed his happiness for cooperating with the EU
mission here and GIZ.
Meanwhile, Head of the EU Delegation in Cairo
Ambassador Ivan Surkoš stressed that the EU is committed to supporting Egypt in
implementing human rights obligations, citing the EU mission offered support to
the NCHR complaints office.
Chairman of the Human Rights Committee Alaa Abed
pointed to the importance of reviewing human rights topics in cooperation with
the European countries.
