An unexpected Air Force One Halloween flyover during President Donald Trump's White House celebration on Thursday, October 29, 2026, startled Washington, D.C., residents and disrupted operations at a nearby airport.
While guests attending the Halloween event watched the aircraft make two dramatic low-altitude passes, people elsewhere in the capital reported confusion and fear over the unusually low-flying jet.
White House Halloween Celebration Features Surprise Flyover
President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump were distributing candy to trick-or-treaters outside the White House when the large aircraft flew overhead.

The first of two passes occurred at approximately 5:45 p.m., shortly after the U.S. military issued a public notice at 5:23 p.m. about an aircraft flyover near the National Mall.

The plane was a Boeing 747-8, valued at approximately $400 million, that had recently been provided by Qatar's government for use as a temporary presidential aircraft.

Technically, an aircraft uses the Air Force One call sign only when the U.S. president is aboard.

A White House social media account celebrated the spectacle, sharing footage of the aircraft passing above the president and describing it as an exciting surprise for children attending the Halloween festivities.
Low-Flying Aircraft Sparks Fear Across Washington
Although the Air Force One Halloween flyover entertained White House guests, many Washington residents were unaware that the demonstration had been planned.

The sight and sound of a jumbo jet flying only hundreds of feet above downtown Washington caused alarm, particularly because the capital operates under strict aviation security restrictions.

Some residents said the incident reminded them of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, when hijacked commercial aircraft struck targets in New York and Washington.

Former U.S. diplomat Daniel Fried said on X that he initially feared the aircraft might be involved in an attack or an impending crash.

He expressed relief that neither scenario was occurring but criticized the surprise demonstration.

One Washington-area lawyer, who requested anonymity, reported driving through a red light in panic while attempting to leave the area.
D.C. Officials Criticize Limited Advance Warning
The Air Force One Halloween flyover also drew criticism from local government officials, who said they had received insufficient notice.

The official D.C. Council account stated that people in downtown Washington, the Pentagon area, and Reagan National Airport had received only about 15 minutes of warning.

Council officials said the unexpected flight had startled them as well as members of the public.

Although the military issued an online notice and distributed alerts by text message, the limited advance communication raised questions about coordination between federal authorities and local officials.
More Than 200 Flights Delayed at Reagan National Airport
The demonstration also affected commercial aviation.

According to Reuters, the Federal Aviation Administration temporarily suspended flight operations at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, located just outside the capital.

The interruption delayed more than 200 arriving and departing flights, extending the consequences of the presidential flyover beyond the White House celebration.

The disruption highlighted the operational challenges associated with conducting low-altitude flights near one of the country's most tightly controlled airspaces.
White House Defends Spectacle as Reactions Divide
Despite criticism from residents and city officials, the White House did not apologize for the Air Force One Halloween flyover.

Its rapid response social media account promoted the event as a memorable attraction for Halloween visitors.

Some observers welcomed the display, including Republican congressional aide Walter Smoloski, who praised the aircraft's appearance on social media.

The mixed reactions reflected a divide between those who viewed the flight as an impressive presidential spectacle and others who considered the lack of advance warning unnecessary and alarming.
Trump Has Previously Featured Dramatic Aircraft Displays
The Halloween demonstration was not the first time Trump incorporated military aviation into a public event.

During a White House visit by Chinese President Xi Jinping in September, a B-2 stealth bomber and other military aircraft conducted a low-altitude flyover.

Earlier in October, the Marine One helicopter carrying Trump back to Washington performed an extended pass over a Baltimore shipyard event while Michael Jackson's song Thriller played at the venue.

These appearances reflect the president's established preference for dramatic aviation displays during public engagements.

Flyover Raises Questions About Public Safety Communication
The Air Force One Halloween flyover has renewed attention to the importance of public notification and coordination during unusual aviation activities over major cities.

While the demonstration was intended to entertain White House visitors, its unexpected nature caused distress among some residents and temporarily interrupted airport operations.

No aviation emergency was reported, but the incident illustrated how an unanticipated aircraft movement can generate fear in a city with heightened security concerns.

The controversy ultimately centers on whether a planned presidential spectacle should have been communicated more widely before taking place, particularly given its proximity to sensitive government facilities and a major commercial airport.
