Daesh militants to be transferred from Syria to Iraq for trial

An Iraqi official stressed on Wednesday that Daesh
militants who will surrender to Syrian authorities will be transferred to Iraq
regardless of their nationality.
They will be tried in accordance with Iraqi laws,
said head of Al Anbar Salvation Council Hamid el Hayes.
Some 1,000 militants with their wives and children
are waiting to be transferred to Iraq for trial after their countries refused
to receive them, he added.
Earlier, 380 Daesh militants, mostly Iraqis, were
transferred from Syria to Iraq for trial.
In late 2017, Baghdad declared victory over Daesh
following a three-year war that ended with the fall of Mosul, the group’s last
remaining stronghold in Iraq.
The Iraqi army, however, continues to wage frequent
operations against Daesh sleeper cells that allegedly remain active in certain
parts of the country.
