Retrial of Morsi in jailbreak case postponed till today

The Cairo Criminal Court on Sunday adjourned till
Monday the retrial of former president Mohamed Morsi and other members of the
Muslim Brotherhood (MB) terrorist group on prison break charges.
In June 2015, the Cairo Criminal Court sentenced to
death Morsi, MB guide Mohamed Badie and his deputy Rashad el Bayoumi, as well
as the group member Mohie Hamed, leader Essam el Eryan and former parliament
speaker Mohamed el Katatny.
Twenty other defendants had been sentenced to life
in prison and two more received prison terms.
In November 2016, the Court of Cassation annulled
the sentence and ordered a retrial of the defendants.
Morsi and his co-defendants face charges of damaging
and setting fire to prison buildings, murder and attempted murder, in addition
to looting prison weapon depots while allowing prisoners from the "Hamas
movement, Lebanon's Hezbollah, jihadists, Brotherhood [members] and other
criminals" to escape jails.
The charges are linked to the escape of more than
20,000 inmates from three Egyptian prisons during the early days of the 2011
revolution.
