French police prepared for protests on the Champs
Elysees on Saturday (April 6), with the iconic avenue closed ahead of the 21st
round of anti-government "yellow vest" protests.
Since the movement began in November 2018, the
Champs Elysees has become a principal area where demonstrators have clashed
with security forces and caused damage to stores.
The French government announced three weeks ago that
demonstrators would be banned from picketing on the avenue every Saturday due
to the repeated violence.
At a news conference during a G7 meeting on Friday
(April 5), French Interior Minister Christophe Castaner said authorities will
maintain a "high level of mobilisation" to counter violent calls for
action.
