G7, European countries demand Haftar halt attack on Libya's Tripoli

The G7 countries and the European Union have
rejected the military operation of the self-styled army of eastern Libya led by
Khalifa Haftar and aimed to enter Tripoli, warning Haftar of the consequences
of this operation.
Foreign Ministers of the UK, US, France, Canada,
Germany, Italy and Japan as well as the EU diplomat Federica Mogherini issued a
joint statement Friday expressing deep concern over military operations near
Tripoli.
"We urge the parties involved in the operation
to immediately cease fire and military movements toward Tripoli as they hinder
the political process led by the UNSMIL and jeopardizes the lives of civilian
residents." G7 added.
They said there can be no military solution to the
Libyan crisis and that they are opposed to the military operations in Libya,
adding that any party uses clashes as a means to gain political power is trying
to create a new civil war in the country which will be harmful to the Libyan
people and their hopes for democracy and peace.
"We are in support of the UN Secretary General
and his envoy to Libya Ghassan Salame and their efforts to end the crisis and
reach accord and unity as per Paris and Palermo meetings last year." The
statement further adds, urging Libyans to rally around the political process.
Meanwhile, the UN Security council has also rejected
military solutions to the Libyans crisis, expressing concerns over the current
escalation and calling on Haftar's forces to avoid military attacks.
