AL chief, US envoy for Syria discuss Syrian crisis

Arab League (AL) Secretary General Ahmed Abul Gheit
met on Tuesday with US special representative for Syria James Jeffrey.
The meeting took up the recent developments in Syria
and efforts made to reach a peaceful settlement to the crisis in the
conflict-hit Arab country, said AL Spokesman Ambassador Mahmoud Afifi.
Jeffrey reviewed at the meeting the outcome of his contacts
with all parties concerned at the political and security levels, added the
spokesman.
He also expressed his country's keenness to get
acquainted with the viewpoint of the AL regarding the crisis, said the
spokesman.
The US representative said that regional and
international parties are interested in the Syrian file and there is a joint
interest to restore stability to Syria, the spokesman pointed out.
The US representative also underlined the necessity
of uprooting all terrorist groups and organizations operating in Syria, added
the spokesman.
Meanwhile, the AL chief asserted at the meeting that
the Syrian crisis is basically an Arab issue, said the spokesman.
He also renewed in this regard the Arab stance,
calling for preserving the unity of the Syrian territories and respecting the
Syrian sovereignty, added the spokesman.
Abul Gheit also underlined the necessity of meeting
the aspirations of the Syrian people as they are the only party having the sole
right to determine the future of the country, according to the spokesman.
Abul Gheit also warned of the negative consequences
of foreign interference in the Syrian crisis, added the spokesman.
