Arab League Launches Dialogue with Japan, UNDP

The Arab League (AL) launched Thursday a new
dialogue initiative on policies in cooperation with the Japanese government and
the United Nations Development Program (UNDP).
The dialogue aims to reinforce cooperation among
member states and expedite accomplishment of sustainable development in
countries torn by conflicts or those recovering from crises.
The Arab League’s General Secretariat affirmed in a
statement that the initiative comes at a time the Arab region faces many
challenges that affect the exerted efforts to achieve peace and meet the
economic and social goals and aspirations of people.
The initiative focuses on a series of high-ranking
roundtable meetings among officials from the League, Japan, the UNDP in
addition to other UN agencies to set certain priorities that can be
implemented, the statement added.
AL’s Assistant Secretary-General, Houssam Zaki,
stated that the organization appreciates the longstanding partnership with
Japan and the UNDP.
Zaki expressed the League’s pleasure in being part
of the dialogue that seeks to foster peace, stability and security, encourages
capacity-building and contributes to achieving the sustainable development
goals in the Arab region.
The Arab official added that the first roundtable
discussions are seen as a key platform for AL, Japan, and the UNDP to bolster
cooperation for the sake of enhancing education.
Further, Japanese Ambassador to Cairo Masaaki Nuki
expressed delight for launching the platform as a significant contributor to
building peace and stability so that the region could flourish.
