Saudi Arabia and Iraq agreed to re-open Arar border
checkpoint on October 15 but only for commercial purposes, said Saudi
Ambassador to Iraq Abdul Aziz al Shammari.
The operation of the checkpoint will be experimental
at first, he said, adding that such a step would further trade and economic
relations between Saudi Arabia and Iraq.
The diplomat gave the remarks while touring the
checkpoint together with Iraq Border Crossing Authority Chairman Kadhim Al
Aqabi.
The reopening of Arar border crossing was the result
of cooperation agreements recently signed between the two countries, the
diplomat said.
The crossing was closed since 1990 when Arab
countries cut ties with Iraq following Saddam Hussein’s invasion of Kuwait.
