The Egyptian Interior Ministry released Thursday an audio of members of Hasm, a militant group affiliated to the banned Muslim Brotherhood movement, who were behind an attempt on the life of Alexandria's former security chief, Mustafa el-Namr, in March.

Policemen killed six militants in a raid on their hideout in Alexandria, the ministry said.

The six militants, it added in a statement, were members of Hasm, originally a splinter group of the Muslim Brotherhood.

It said policemen also arrested two other people during the same raid.

A security official said on Wednesday that policemen had killed four militants in a shootout in the southern part of Assiut province.

The Interior Ministry confirmed this news in its statement on Thursday.

The militants killed in Alexandria and in Assuit, it said, were behind an explosion that targeted the convoy of Alexandria's former security chief in March.

The security chief emerged unharmed from the blast, but two policemen were killed.

Hasm routinely targets security personnel.
