US President Donald Trump announced on Sunday that the US troops carried out a qualitative military operation targeted ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, who might have been killed in the raid.

Newsweek quoted a US Defense Ministry source as saying that al-Baghdadi’s two wives had probably detonated their explosive vests during the airstrike on the countryside near Idlib.

According to Pentagon sources, no children were harmed in the raid but two Baghdadi wives were killed after detonating their own explosive vests.

However, the announcement raises a number of questions about al-Baghdadi’s wives, who have been a topic of the media since the terrorist organization was formed in 2014.

Saja Dulaimi was one of al-Baghdadi’s wives. A Lebanese TV channel said in December 2014 that Dulaimi was an ex-wife of al-Baghdadi. According to the Lebanese officials, Dulaimi has a daughter from him.

However, Iraqi officials said al-Baghdadi married only Asmaa Dulaimi and Israa al-Qaissy.

Researcher Hisham El-Naggar, an expert on Islamist movements, said that it is possible al-Baghdadi had detonated the vests that killed his wives.

“Al-Baghdadi has been worried by ISIS women, who were arrested after the defeat of the organization in Syria. That may be the reason for killing his wives,” El-Naggar told THE REFERENCE.

“Another reason is that al-Baghdadi has reached a desperate condition and is deeply frustrated. These conditions may have been the reason. Al-Baghdadi has been criticized for not being a competent military leader. He is desperate as most of his top men were killed. He would prefer death like Osama bin Laden to be being arrested,” El-Naggar explained.

“He has no other options,” he added.
