43 defendants sentenced to varied jail terms in "El Fateh Mosque" violence case

Cairo Criminal Court on Thursday issued varied
prison sentences against 43 defendants whom it found guilty of involvement in
the violent clashes that took place at al-Fateh Mosque in the wake of the
dispersal of the Muslim Brotherhood's Rabaa sit-in.
The court sentenced four defendants to rigorous 10
year imprisonment, five were given 7 years in jail, 31 got five year jail
terms, three got three years and another five were acquitted of all charges.
On August 17, 2013, Egypt’s security forces
surrounded al-Fateh mosque, in downtown Cairo’s Ramses Square after a few
hundred supporters of the Muslim Brotherhood regime barricaded themselves
inside it to protest the toppling of then president Mohamed Morsi.
After a long standoff and confrontations that saw
the protesters exchange fire with the security forces, they were all taken out
of the mosque.
The clashes outside the place left 44 people killed
and 59 injured, including 22 personnel of the security forces.
