35 tons of medical and humanitarian aid from Emirati to support Somalia "
As part of the efforts of the United Arab
Emirates to combat the spread of the new corona virus, the country during the
past period assisted the Republic of Somalia in the face of the deadly
epidemic, as Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President of the
State, ordered to provide humanitarian and urgent assistance to the Arab
sister.
According to the Emirati news agency WAM,
Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum’s directives come in response to the call
of the World Health Organization and the United Nations High Commissioner for
Refugees, as flights were immediately sent to the Somali capital, Mogadishu,
carrying more than 35 tons of medical equipment and humanitarian aid. To
enhance Somalia's ability to cope with the Coruna epidemic.
Estimated UAE aid in efforts to combat the
emerging corona virus in Somalia, approximately 130 million US dollars,
benefited more than 640 thousand health workers to support them in the face of
the virus directly.
The newspaper "New Somalia"
confirmed that the UAE sent nearly 100 respirators to Somalia, while the Somali
hospitals needed these devices.
It is worth noting that the total UAE aid
to Somalia from 2010 to March 2020 amounted to 1.2 billion dirhams, benefiting
more than 1.2 million Somalis; Especially from the category of women and
children most in need, and they were in the form of 100% non-refundable grants,
with more than half of them reaching 58.3% in development aid amounting to 695
million dirhams.
For his part, the UAE’s ambassador to
Somalia, Mohamed Ahmed Othman Al Hammadi, said in previous press statements
that the UAE has a duty to provide all it can to provide all forms of support
to enhance global efforts to limit the spread of "Coffid-19".
He stressed that since the beginning of the
crisis of the new Corona virus, the UAE has sent urgent medical aid shipments
to a number of countries, and has also supported relevant international
organizations and their specialized bodies, especially the World Health
Organization, to deliver medical aid to a large number of countries in need.
The UAE’s ambassador to Somalia added that
the large logistical capabilities of the UAE in the air transport enabled it to
transport medical equipment and devices and provide urgent medical supplies to
thousands of medical workers, and to provide them with the necessary equipment
to practice their work in treating patients from the virus.
