The Egyptian support around the world amid Covid-19
Since
the spread of Covid-19, the Egyptian state has been keen on sending medical aid
to countries in need amid the virus, especially Italy, China and Britain, in
light of health disasters, aid between countries and some of them remains a
major variable for diplomatic and humanitarian relations.
Egyptian support for China
In
early March 2020, during the height of the virus outbreak in Wuhan, China, the
government decided to send Egyptian Health Minister Hala Zayed at the head of a
high-level delegation to Beijing to provide a large shipment of medical aid to
the country that was most in need at the time. The minister also sent a message
of solidarity from the Egyptian people and the president Abdel Fattah El-Sisi
to the Chinese government and people to overcome the crisis.
On
the other hand, Chinese officials expressed their appreciation for the Egyptian
humanitarian role in the Corona crisis that struck the Chinese province of
Wuhan, as the Minister Plenipotentiary of the Chinese Embassy in Cairo, Li
Yong, said in April 2020 that his country will not forget the Egyptian aid that
was provided during the height of the disease outbreak in his country.
Egypt's aid to the afflicted Italy
On
the same approach in assisting countries most in need, Egypt initiated with the
assistance of Italy, which, at the height of the outbreak, suffered a collapse
in the medical sector, a severe shortage of health supplies and prevention
tools, as well as high rates of deaths that exceeded the number who lost their
lives in China, which is the beginning of the emergence of the virus, On March
22, 2020, Egypt sent a cargo plane to Malpensa Airport, Italy, carrying
preventive medical tools that include protective clothing from the virus and
medical masks to prevent the spread of infection, and at that time Italy’s
Minister of Foreign Affairs, Luigi de Mayo on his social media page, Twitter,
thanked the Egyptian government for its contribution to helping workers In
Italian hospitals.
In
early April 2020, the Minister of Health, Hala Zayed, went under the direction
of President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi to accompany a large delegation to provide
more aid to the afflicted European country, as the armed forces equipped two
military planes carrying the necessary supplies to prevent the virus, such as
medical suits, gags, hand gloves and others.
It
is worth noting that Egypt's aid to Italy came at a very critical time for Rome
and the surrounding countries, as the former was losing thousands of people
every day, and faced a health disaster, while the European Union countries were
accused at the time of abandoning the principle of solidarity in each other's
aid, according to Reuters published in March 4, 2020 A decision by the German
government to stop the export of preventive medical supplies such as gloves and
gloves as well as ventilators to cover their needs only and not others. For its
part, the Czech Republic confiscated an aid shipment that was on its way from
China to Italy, which showed an odd dimension to the humanitarian crisis in
Italy, which is Probably the same reason that caused confusion by Egypt's
hostile media platforms to distort its noble position in the face of
international positions from Rome, and the Egyptian role in helping Italy
during the Corona pandemic contributed to forming campaigns of thanks from
within the country on social media platforms of the Egyptian government.
Egyptian aid to Britain and the United States
On
14 April 2020, Britain's Minister of International Trade, Lise Truss, confirmed
Egyptian preparations to send shipments of medical aid to her country, which
during the crisis faced an acute shortage of medical supplies needed to prevent
the spread of infection.
On
April 21, 2020, President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi directed the government to
supply a shipment of medical aid to the United States of America, which has
suffered thousands of deaths daily during the height of the disease, as the
Egyptian state is considered one of the most prominent assistants to the
countries that witnessed a rise in the numbers of highly contagious virus
infections.
