Iran issues arrest warrant for Trump in new propaganda move
Iran continues to make claims about its ability to stand against the United States.
On June 29,
Iran issued an arrest warrant for US President Donald Trump.
It said it
issued the arrest warrant against the background of Trump's involvement in the
drone strike that killed a top Iranian general in January. Trump is one of 36
people who now have a warrant out for their arrest in relation to the death of
the general, Qasem Soleimani, who was previously commander of the Islamic
Revolution Gaurd Corps.
Iranian
announcement
According
to the Tehran attorney general Ali Alqasi Mehr, Trump is at the top of the list
in regards to the warrants.
Mehr stated
that Trump would be prosecuted as soon as his presidential term ends.
Iran also
stated that it had asked Interpol to issue a Red Notice for the 36 individuals.
However, it is unlikely that Interpol will grant this request as it violates a
rule that the organization intervenes in political, military, or religious
activities.
However, US
Iran envoy Brian Hook said Iran’s issuance of an arrest warrant for President
Trump and 35 others over the killing of top general Qassem Soleimani is a "propaganda
stunt."
He added at
a news conference in Saudi Arabia that the American assessment is that Interpol
does not intervene and issue Red Notices that are based on a political nature.
"This is
a political nature. This has nothing to do with national security,
international peace or promoting stability ... It is a propaganda stunt that
no-one takes seriously," Hook said.
Meanwhile, Interpol
announced that it will not consider the Iranian request to pursue US President
Trump and 35 other people whom Tehran considers responsible for the
assassination of Soleimani.
An Interpol
spokesperson told Russia’s RIA Novosti publication that consideration of the
Iranian request, which affects 36 people, including military and political
officials in the United States, would have been inconsistent with the
organization’s constitution.
